Welcome to UVA!
On behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to UVA! We are happy to have you join our University of Virginia multicultural family. All is quiet here on Grounds, but we are actively preparing for your visit during Orientation and for the fall semester.
Multicultural Student Services, a unit within the Office of the Dean of Students, provides programs and services to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Through MSS, you can participate in mentoring programs, leadership development programs, receive individual and group support, cultural organization support, and engage with both the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) and LGBTQ Center (QC). We strive to provide a supportive environment where individual growth and cultural expression is encouraged.
You should be receiving an e-mail from us if you self-identified (during the admission process) as a member of the racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual identities that our office serves. We hope that you will take advantage of our many culturally- and identity-specific programs and services as part of your student life at UVA.
Community-based communications may include weekly Multicultural Student Service newsletters, services, programs events, volunteer/internship/employment opportunities, funding and scholarship opportunities, and other important notifications specifically targeted to a cultural community. If you did not receive an e-mail and wish to receive such notices, please e-mail email@example.com sharing your interest in receiving these notifications.
Please be sure to stop by the Multicultural Student Services offices, comprised of the Multicultural Student Center and LGBTQ Center, located on the lower level of Newcomb Hall. There are numerous resources and services available to you, including computers, printing, and programming, to name a few.
Here are some ways you can be involved even before you're on grounds.
- Sign up for one of our three peer mentor programs: Peer Advising Family Network(PAFN) for Asian Pacific Islander/Desi Americans (APIDA), Hispanic/Latinx Peer Mentoring Program (PMP), or Middle Eastern Mentoring Program (MEMP). Our peer mentor programs pair incoming first year and transfer students with upperclass mentors. You will soon receive an official invitation based on information you provided during the admission process. Don't miss out on a great opportunity to be mentored by older students, meet other 1st years and transfers, and take part in awesome events throughout the year!
- Consider ways to get more involved or develop your leadership potential. Consider joining WAALI (for 2nd and 3rd Year A/APA Women during Fall Semester) and APALTI (for 1st and 2nd Year A/APA students during Spring Semester). Click on each link to learn more. New in 2017-2018 is the Latinx Leadership Institute. Look out for an e-mail invitation in the fall semester, or check this page for more information.
- Follow us on Social Media! Follow our Facebook and Twitter accounts to be kept up to date to events.
As you prepare for your move to UVA in August, keep Tuesday, August 22nd from 6:30-8PM open for our New Student Welcome in the Newcomb Ballroom with free food and a chance to meet other new students and student leaders. Immediately following the welcome event, we will host individual receptions for cultural affinity groups. We will send you a reminder about these events closer to your arrival in August.
If you have any questions about anything regarding student life or just want to chat about anything, don't hesitate to contact us! We look forward to meeting all of you soon!
